Massoud Mossaheb, an Iranian-Austrian dual national held by Tehran since January 2019, has been released from Evin Prison on medical leave, his supporters wrote on Monday.
The 75-year-old engineer has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on vague national security charges which he and those close to him have denied. He was formerly secretary-general of the Iranian-Austrian Association.
The Islamic Republic regularly arrests dual nationals on fabricated grounds. They are generally used for political leverage or to attempt to extort third countries for material, financial or diplomatic concessions.
The Free Massoud campaign posted on Twitter on Monday confirming Mossaheb had been granted a period of absence. “This is the best day in 3.5 years,” they wrote.
