Health of Jailed Iranian Activist Who Exposed Corruption Deteriorating

Jailed Iranian activist Mahmoud Mehrabi has developed kidney failure during his 10-months incarceration and is experiencing severe swelling throughout his body, IranWire has learned.

Despite Mehrabi’s deteriorating health, his repeated requests for medical leave have been left unanswered, according to a source with knowledge of the matter. 

He is being denied adequate medical attention in prison as well as access to the medication provided by his family.

Mehrabi, who has been behind bars since February for his social media activities, is accused of "corruption on Earth," a charge that can carry the death penalty. The case is said to be related to his exposure of corruption among officials in the city of Mobarakeh, Isfahan province.

While in custody, Mehrabi underwent surgery for a hernia rupture caused by torture inflicted during his interrogation by intelligence agents of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the source said. 

But the surgery was not properly conducted, and Mehrabi was immediately returned to prison upon its completion.

Mehrabi, a 35-year-old graduate in electrical engineering from Isfahan’s Allameh Majlesi University, worked on the Isfahan-Mobarakeh city train project when he uncovered the corrupt practices of city officials.

Following his revelations, security agents apprehended him at his workplace in 2017.

His most recent arrest occurred at his home just hours after his release from Isfahan’s Dastgerd Prison on bail.
