A court in Iran has handed down capital punishment to a young ethnic Arab man and sentenced his brother to a long-term prison term.
According to the Karun news agency, which reports on human rights violations in southwestern Khuzestan province, the Mahshahr Revolutionary Court sentenced Ali Obeidavi to death, amid a sharp escalation in the use of capital punishment in the country.
His brother Hossein was handed down a 13-year prison sentence.
The pair were arrested four years ago for allegedly attacking a base of the paramilitary Basij force in Mahshahr.
The judiciary claims that a female member of the force lost her life during the attack, a source familiar with the case told IranWire.
The source further said that during the interrogations of the Obeidavi brothers, physical and psychological torture was used to extract their confessions.
Ali and Hossein Obeidavi are currently detained in Mahshahr’s Nava prison.
