Iranian authorities have sentenced Mohammad Nourizad, a 66-year-old dissident filmmaker, screenwriter and journalist, to an additional 61 months in prison.
Since 2019, Nourizad has been serving a 15-year prison term for allegedly insulting Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
He stated that the main reason for the latest sentence was his "refusal to remain silent in the face of violations."
Upon discovering that approximately 90 billion tomans ($1.7 million) had been withdrawn from prisoners' bank accounts across Iran, "everyone else chose to remain silent, but I protested and took action," he explained.
Nourizad is among 14 signatories of a 2019 statement calling for Khamenei’s resignation, the abolition of the Islamic Republic and the establishment of a secular government.
