Iranian authorities have sentenced political activist Abolfazl Ghadyani to an additional 10 months in prison, adding to his existing sentence as the Islamic Republic continues its crackdown on dissent.
Ghadyani, a critic of Iran's judiciary, received the new sentence on charges of “propaganda activities against the Islamic Republic,” according to reports.
Officials have also opened a new case against him.
The 80-year-old activist is currently serving his previous sentence at Tehran’s Fashafoyeh Prison, after being transferred from Evin Prison following Israel’s missile attack on Evin.
Ghadyani and fellow imprisoned journalist Mehdi Mahmoudian published an account of the Israeli attack on Evin Prison after their transfer.
A former member of the Organization of Mojahedin of the Islamic Revolution, Ghadyani has been repeatedly prosecuted in recent years for his criticism of religious authoritarianism. He has served multiple prison terms.
The activist has called for the abolition of Iran’s Guardian Council system and the establishment of a secular democratic republic.
Ghadyani suffers from several health conditions, including a severe lung infection.
Rights groups warn that his continued imprisonment could endanger his life, given his age and medical condition.
The new sentence comes as Iran escalates its crackdown on political opposition and civil society activists amid ongoing tensions with Israel and domestic unrest.
