A group of Iranian labor activists from Haft-Tappeh Sugar Factory have visited the grave of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Iranian woman whose death has prompted a wave of protests across Iran.

Union members also met with Mahsa’s family on Wednesday and expressed their solidarity with both them and those protesting on the streets.

Former political prisoner and prominent labor rights activist Esmail Bakhshi posted about the meeting on Twitter. Ebrahim Abbasi-Manjezi, another labor activist from Haft-Tappeh, also posted photos of Mahsa’s burial place following the visit.

He wrote: “We went and saw the light around the path to freedom. She is resting in the ground, but has left us a map to freedom.”

Since 2014, the Haft-Tappeh Sugar Factory in Khuzestan has been the site of sustained, widely-covered industrial action.

In 2017, factory workers held one of the largest trade union protests in Iran’s history in opposition to the company’s privatization. After consultations and negotiations with the authorities failed, workers took to the streets to protest for months on end.

Bakhshi was first arrested in connection with the strikes in November 2018 together with another prominent supporter, Sepideh Gholian. During his arrest, he was tortured and forced to confess to fabricated crimes.

He was released in 2019 after spending 10 months in prison, and forced to pay a bail of more than 750 million tomans (US$67,000). Abbasi-Manjezi was also arrested during the protests and later released.
