Hezbollah Protesters Target Bushehr Band

A hundred Hezbollah supporters illegally gathered in Bushehr port on January 2, forcing a concert by local band Lian to be postponed.

On the orders of the governor, security forces broke up the assembly, permitting the rest of the concert to go ahead. According to Khaleej-e Fars news agency, the band, which performs traditional southern Iranian folk music, had been granted permission to perform in Bushehr after a 16-year ban.

Demonstrators, who referred to themselves as “Umah Hezbollah,” gathered to pray in front of the venue where Lian was scheduled to play, obstructing the entrance.

Those disrupting the performance, which was due to start at 7.00pm but was delayed until 8.20pm, claimed the musicians failed to comply with Islamic laws. The group, which is originally from Bushehr, plays some modern instruments and dances during performances.

According to Lian member Mohsen Sharifian, the concert was a sell-out, with all 400 tickets being sold in a matter of hours. The group, which regularly plays large venues in Tehran, will also perform in their hometown on January 10 and 11.
