Combating Censorship Online

Recent research conducted by the Ministry of Sports and Youth has revealed that 70 percent of Iranians aged between 15 and 29 use anti-filtering software or proxy servers when using the internet.

Whether its private forums hosting popular debates, independent news or open-source blogging platforms, most young web users employ anti-filtering software or downloads to access blocked websites and protect their identities.

Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are blocked in Iran, though it common knowledge that both President Hassan Rouhani and the Supreme Leader regularly tweet.

Sports and youth minister Mohammad Taghi Hassanzadeh said 68 percent of all young people in Iran use the internet. According to the study, 19 percent of web users go online to use chat forums and services; 15 percent use the web to access Facebook and other social network sites; 15 percent play online games, and 10 percent use the web to conduct research.

Website Mehrname reported that the ministry’s research also found that Iranians are increasingly turning to the internet to get accurate, reliable news. “Only 45 percent of Iranians trust news broadcast on national television,” it said.
