The Berlin International Film Festival has called on the Iranian authorities to allow two Iranian writers and directors from traveling to the German capital later this month to present their new film at the 74th edition of the festival.
Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha's film My Favourite Cake is to premiere in the Berlinale competition. The festival will run from February 15 to 25.
The two have been banned from traveling, have had their passports confiscated, and face a court trial on charges of "propaganda against the system and actions against national security."
The Berlinale “is shocked and dismayed to learn that Moghaddam and Sanaeeha could be prevented from travelling to the festival to present their film and meet their audience in Berlin,” it said in a statement on February 1.
Moghaddam and Sanaeeha have gained international acclaim particularly for their film Ballad Of A White Cow, which was presented in competition at the 2021 Berlinale and emerged as an audience favorite in public voting that year.
