Forty Protesters Arrested in Yazd

The Yazd Prosecutor General announced that 40 people were arrested in the city in connection with protests there over the last two days.

Mohammed Hadadzadeh attributed the protests in Yazd to the government’s sudden decision to triple gas prices. But he also called the protesters "opportunists and enemies" of the government.

Hadadzadeh added: "These people destroyed public property and in some cases clashed with the police, which resulted in police injury."

According to him, "Most of the detainees are non-native and not from Yazd."

Over the past two days, more than 50 Iranian cities witnessed unrest and protests over rising gas prices.

Reports indicate that at least 10 people were killed in the demonstrations as a result of police or security forces opening fire on protesters.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, has defended the price hike and insisted that the policy should be implemented.
