Tanks and Machine Guns Used to Subdue People of Mahshahr

On Saturday, November 16, nationwide protests against the steep increase in gas prices spread quickly across cities in Iran. This video, an IranWire exclusive, was filmed on that day and shows military forces confronting protesters with tanks and heavy machine guns across the port city of Mahshahr in the southwestern province of Khuzestan.

Despite this show of force, however, protests in Mahshahr continued for days [Persian link]. Because authorities shut down the internet after the protests started, the exact number of those killed in Mahshahr is still not clear but, according to Amnesty International, as of November 19, at least 14 people were killed in the ancient port city and its suburbs. IranWire has published the names of 10 people who died during protests in Mahshahr.
