A 25-year-old Iranian woman, who is a mother of two young girls, was reportedly killed by her father in what is being described as an "honor killing."
Janeh Pirnezhad's father suffocated her by submerging her head in a tub of water, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
The motive behind the crime was to "protect family honor" after a video of Pirnezhad at home with her cousin was circulated.
At the time of the murder, Pirnezhad's husband, who works as a laborer, was not present.
This case adds to a growing trend of violence against women and femicides in Iran.
Since March 21, 2024, at least 69 women across Iran have been killed by close individuals and family members, according to Hengaw.
Of these, 12 cases have been categorized as "honor-related" murders.
Shargh newspaper, in a report citing official statistics last year, reported that in less than two years, at least 165 women in Iran were killed by a male member of their family, 41 of which were in the capital Tehran.
