The Islamic Republic’s authorities have disconnected the heating system at a women’s prison amidst a severe cold wave sweeping across Iran.
A source told IranWire that, in addition to shutting off the heating, prison authorities have also prevented families from delivering warm clothing to inmates at Qarchak prison.
The heating disruption comes at a critical time when extreme cold temperatures have forced many schools and government offices across Iran to close.
Multiple provinces in Iran closed schools and offices on Tuesday due to freezing weather and ongoing energy shortages.
The situation has particularly impacted Qarchak prison, which has long been notorious for its harsh conditions.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly condemned the prison’s treatment of detainees.
The Norway-based Iran Human Rights Organization has described Qarchak prison as a “hell for women and children” in a report and has called for the facility’s immediate closure.
