Iran Again Blames West And Allies For Unrest

Iran has repeatedly blamed foreign countries for the burst of public anger.

The Iranian regime has again blamed Washington and its allies for the nationwide unrest that has rocked the country for over one month, claiming that some of the protesters were trained by western intelligence agencies.

In a long statement issued on Friday, the elite Revolutionary Guard Corps and Ministry of Information alleged that the United States has paid Iranian protesters through programs aimed at supporting democracy and human rights, and provided them with training in urban warfare.

The statement, which did not provide any evidence for the claims, also accused Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and others of involvement in the protests calling for the downfall of the Islamic Republic.

Security agencies will continue to identify and arrest the “rioters,” the statement warned, as one human rights organization reported that the brutal crackdown by security services has already killed at least 253 people, including 34 children. Several thousand others have been arrested.

The wave of public anger, now on its 42nd day, was triggered by the September 16 death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested by the morality police in Tehran for not wearing her hijab in a “proper” manner.

The rallies first focused on Iran’s strict dress code for women, but soon grew into the most serious challenge to the country’s theocratic government since the 2009 Green Movement demonstrations.
