In July 2022, at least four IRGC members were reportedly killed in an armed clash with Kurdish fighters.

Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has launched air strikes on Iraq's semiautonomous Kurdish region, killing at least one person, in the latest round of Iranian attacks on the area in recent weeks.

The IRCG said it had targeted the bases of “terrorist groups” by drones and missiles, according to Iranian media.

The mayor of the northern Iraqi city of Koye said at least one person was killed and 10 others were wounded in the attacks on the headquarters of an Iranian-Kurdish party.

A security official from one of the exiled groups targeted, the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran, said they had suffered casualties but did not provide more details, the AP news agency reported. The party has waged an insurgency against the Islamic Republic since its founding in 1979.

Kurdish Prime Minister Masrour Barzani called the Iranian attack a “violation” of Iraqi sovereignty.

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed al-Sahaf said Baghdad was planning to pursue “diplomatic steps” in response to the attack.

“The Iranian bombing offends the principle of good-neighborliness. Some neighbors systematically abuse Iraq,” al-Sahaf added.

The UN mission in Iraq said Iraq should not be “used as an arena to settle scores,” adding: “Dialogue between Iraq and Iran over mutual security concerns is the only way forward.”

Iran stepped up attacks on Iraq-based Kurdish groups in September, with the IRGC accusing them of "attacking and infiltrating Iran to sow insecurity and riots and spread unrest."

Anti-government demonstrations erupted across Iran in mid-September over the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, in the custody of Tehran’s morality police. The protest movement has grown to becoming the biggest threat to the clerical regime since the 1979 revolution.
