At least 100 Iran Protesters Face Capital Punishment, Group Says

At least 100 Iranian protesters are facing capital punishment as the death toll of the security forces’ crackdown on nationwide protests reached 476, a Norway-based human rights organization says.

Iran Human Rights said on December 27 that those killed since the eruption of the protest movement in the middle of September included 64 children and 34 women.

The group said the highest numbers of deaths were reported in the provinces of Sistan and Baluchistan, Western Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Tehran and Mazandaran. Many of the deaths were recorded on September 21, 22 and 30.

"Furthermore, at least 100 protesters are currently at risk of execution, death penalty charges or sentences,” it added.

The country has been swept by protests since the September 16 death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, in the custody of morality police.

More than 18,000 people have reportedly been arrested in the state crackdown on the protests, which have morphed into one of the most serious challenges to the theocracy installed by the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The demonstrations and state clampdown have been particularly intense in the country’s western Kurdish areas and the eastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan, home to a Sunni Baluch minority.
