Families gathered in front of Evin Prison waiting for news of their detained loved ones were attacked by security forces on Monday, IranWire understands.

Hundreds if not thousands of people have been detained in Tehran alone since protests broke out sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini on September 16. Earlier today a crowd of around 300 people had formed outside the capital’s most notorious jail, where most of the country’s political prisoners are housed.

People waited for hours outside, a source told IranWire, without any engagement from officials inside the building. Then without warning armed officers lined up in front of them and tear gassed the crowd.

Some of those present shouted “Disgraceful, disgraceful”. A van carrying prison supplies seemingly lost control and drove straight toward them, fortunately not causing any injuries. They were forced away from the prison complex and eventually dispersed.

In recent days, IranWire has been told, officers have barricaded the entrances to Evin Prison and stopped usual visits. The majority of people arbitrarily detained in the capital are being held in unknown locations and their families have not been informed of the charges against them.
