Iran’s nationwide protests, sparked by the September death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman in the custody of Tehran’s morality police, have been at their most intense in the western areas where the majority of the country’s Kurds live. In the mainly Kurdish city of Mahabad, in West Azerbaijan province, human rights activists say security forces have stepped up suppression of persistent demonstrations, deploying troops there and killing several demonstrators in recent days. These pictures, taken in Mahabad on November 17, give a glimpse of a Kurdish city turned into a war zone.
