Iranian authorities sealed dozens of shops and restaurants deemed not in compliance with religious customs during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

This action has sparked concerns about government overreach and economic hardship.

The closures were justified under the notion of "violating norms," according to officials.

The Police Chief of Ray city in Tehran province, Mohammad Qasim Tarhani, announced the sealing of 24 businesses during a Ramadan inspection initiative.

He said the police would take "firm action" against those disregarding religious observances.

The move comes after the Ministry of Interior issued a new directive ordering the complete closure of restaurants, cafes, and food vendors within the city limits during Ramadan.

Cold takeaway food service, however, "is permitted with a limited permit from relevant restaurants."
