The fire at a drug rehabilitation center in Gilan province was extinguished, and authorities are investigating the cause, state TV reported

A fire broke out at a drug rehabilitation center in Iran’s Caspian Sea province of Gilan on November 3, killing at least 32 people and injuring 16, local media reported.

Those injured were taken to hospitals in the city of Langroud, about 200 kilometers northwest of the capital, Tehran, according to state TV.

The fire was extinguished, and authorities are investigating the cause, it said.

The judiciary's Mizan news agency said the center's managers and officials were under investigation. It said the center's capacity was about 40 people.

First responders were said to have been called shortly before 6 a.m. local time.

Such accidents are not rare in Iran, mainly because of the disregarding of safety measures, aging facilities and inadequate emergency services.

Iran has one of the severest addiction problems in the world, according to the UN Office of Drugs and Crime.

The country lies on the main trafficking route for poppy, the source of opium and heroin, from Afghanistan to Western Europe.
