Roya Broumand Awarded by ASIL for Human Rights Work in Iran

Roya Broumand, the Executive Director of the Abdorrahman Boroumand Foundation, has been awarded the Guler T. Butcher Medal by the American Society of International Law (ASIL).

With over a century of experience, the ASIL is a leading organization dedicated to promoting international law and justice. 

Since 1997, the ASIL has presented the Butcher Medal to exceptional individuals who contribute significantly to "the development or realization of human rights."

Broumand received the award for her efforts to promote human rights and democracy in Iran. 

Through the Abdorrahman Boroumand Foundation, she has spearheaded the creation of comprehensive and unbiased reports documenting human rights abuses in Iran.

The Abdorrahman Boroumand Foundation, established in 2001 by Roya and Ladan Boroumand, honors their father, Abdolrahman Boroumand, who was assassinated in Paris in 1991 by agents of the Islamic Republic. 

As a non-profit, non-governmental organization, the foundation strives to strengthen democracy and human rights by maintaining a database of human rights violations. 

Their documented research has been instrumental in international forums, playing a crucial role in condemning the Islamic Republic's human rights abuses. 

Notably, the foundation's documentation was cited in the conviction of Hamid Nouri for his participation in the mass executions of Iranian political prisoners in 1988.

Prior recipients of the Guler T. Butcher Medal include Asma Jahangir, the former UN Special Rapporteur on Iran, who received the honor in 2016.

The late Guler T. Butcher, a distinguished African-American jurist and professor of international law at Harvard Law School, was a pioneer in the fight against famine and hunger in Africa.
