Memorial Service for Alireza Shir Mohammad Ali

Following the Shia tradition, on the 40th day after his death, a memorial service was held for Alireza Shir Mohammad Ali, a political prisoner who was murdered by fellow inmates on June 10.

This video was taken by an IranWire citizen journalist, who writes that the ceremony was held without interference from security agents. Most of the mourners and attendants believed that it was the firm stance of Alireza Shir Mohammad Ali’s mother, Mahnaz Sarabi, that kept security forces away.

On July 25, Sarabi told IranWire that she addressed the chief justice Ebrahim Raeesi in a video message, insisting that if security agents prevented the mourning service she would remove her hijab and protest.

Davoud Farhadpour: Alireza was the victim of a failure to separate inmates in prison

“The judiciary put the two murderers on trial but it has done nothing about the culprits,” civil activist Davoud Farhadpour told IranWire. “The failure to separate inmates has led to the murder of political prisoners. Earlier, Vahid Sayadi Nasir died in Qom Prison as a result of his hunger strike in protest against this failure.”

Alireza Shir Mohammad Ali was 21 when he was sentenced to eight years in prison on charges of “insulting the Supreme Leader,” “insulting the sacred” and “propaganda activities against the regime.” On the night of June 10, he was stabbed to death by two convicted criminals. In the Greater Tehran Penitentiary, also known as Fashafuyeh Prison, the inmates are not separated according to the type of crime they have committed as the law requires. People jailed on political grounds are kept alongside common prisoners, or even dangerous ones. Political prisoners and their families have been protesting against this situation for a long time.

Alireza’s Mother: I wish my son could be the last political victim

“When Alireza was a child and I kissed his throat I did not know that one day they would cut that same throat,” says Mahnaz Sarabi, mother of Shir Mohammad Ali, in this video. “I hope my Alireza will be the last political victim. I saw God’s injustice in the murder of my son. My child was shedding blood for seven minutes but nobody came to his help.”
