Police Report Biggest Ever Cryptocurrency Farm Bust in Tehran

Tehran police yesterday claimed to have discovered the largest-ever largest cryptocurrency mining farm in Iran.

The seizure of the covert facility in west Tehran, which apparently housed more than 7,000 mining machines, was reported by IRNA on Tuesday.

Tehran police chief Hossein Rahimi told reporters that the miners had taken up residence in an abandoned factory, and were still in the process of fitting it out when they were caught.

This number of mining devices, he claimed, could have consumed up to four percent of the country’s electricity operating at full steam.

Rahimi also said 3,000 other mining devices had been discovered in the Iranian capital in the past 48 hours.

A spokesperson for the electricity industry had previously said unauthorized cryptocurrency mining was accounting for 2,000 megawatts of Iran's daily consumption.

This statement was in turn clarified by the Minister of Energy, who said that of this 2,000 megawatts, 321 was being consumed by facilities operating with a license.

The Iranian government has entered into several joint enterprises with foreign companies to mine cryptocurrency in the country. The Iran-China Chamber of Commerce has confirmed that China, Poland, India and Turkey have stakes in cryptocurrency mining farms in Iran.
