The family and friends of an Iranian lawyer who has been behind bars for more than three months are raising deep concerns over his health after he said he was suffering from internal bleeding in his kidney.

In December 2022, security forces abducted Seyed Mohammad Amin Jafari Hosseini from his home in the central city of Shiraz, amid a brutal state crackdown on dissent, civil activists and lawyers in Iran.

A UNICEF member and civil rights activist, Hosseini is currently incarcerated in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) intelligence detention center in the Persian Gulf city of Bandar Abbas.

According to the information received by IranWire, Hosseini has only been able to speak to his parents in two one-minute calls. He spoke about his health issues in a call 10 days ago.

The authorities have denied Hosseini access to legal representation, and his family has been pressured not to disclose his arrest and condition.

His family and friends have been unable to obtain information about his health and the charges he is facing.

Iran has been swept by more than five months of anti-government protests triggered by the September death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, in the custody of morality police.

Security forces have cracked down hard on the women-led protest movement, killing more than 520 people and unlawfully detaining over 20,000, activists say. Following biased trials, the judiciary has handed down stiff sentences, including the death penalty, to protesters.

In January, the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) said at least 44 defense attorneys had been arrested since September “to block their ability to seek justice for arbitrarily arrested activists and street protesters.”

Saleh Nikbakht, the lawyer for Amini’s family, has recently been summoned to the Islamic Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office at Tehran's Evin prison and accused of "propaganda against the Islamic republic," according to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network.
