The Revolutionary Court in the south-western city of Ahvaz has handed down one-year prison sentences to eight ethnic Arab activists and banned them from traveling abroad amid a crackdown on political and civil activists in Khuzestan province.
The HRANA human rights news agency said that Fayez Zahroni, Hossein Farajollah Chaab, Nasser Shei, Towfiq Falahiyeh, Hossein Estedad, Hadi Jalali and Saeed Fakher Nasab also received five-year suspended sentences.
The defendants had been charged with allegedly committing "acts against national security."
Government forces arrested the eight cultural and civic activists in 2018. They were transferred to Shiban prison in Ahvaz after undergoing interrogation and were later released on bail, pending the conclusion of legal proceedings.
They have reportedly been tortured while in custody
