Saqqez - A widely respected woman activist in Saqqez has been arrested amid an alarming surge in arrests targeting civil society in Mahsa Amini’s hometown ahead of the first anniversary of her death.
Security agents violently apprehended Heroo Ghadimi on September 12 without presenting any arrest warrant.
The reason for her arrest is unclear.
The activist has been active in collecting aid for the needy in the western Kurdish city.
Earlier in the day, IranWire reported that Omid Moghadas, a prominent activist in Saqqez, was taken into custody without any apparent reason.
The Iranian authorities, fearing a flare up in protests ahead of the September 16 anniversary of Amini’s death in police custody, have ramped up security measures in Kurdistan province, particularly Saqqez.
Videos shared on social media suggest that troops are being deployed to Saqqez and other cities in Kurdistan.
Cities in the province have experienced a significant slowdown in internet speed over the past 48 hours.
