Eighteen people have been arrested for attending a mixed-gender party in Karun, a city in Khuzestan Province, according to the local prosecutor.
Mohammad Amin Azarnoush, the prosecutor general of Karun near Ahvaz, announced that police raided the gathering under a judicial order, detaining the organizers and confiscating quantities of alcoholic beverages.
The prosecutor claimed the party involved “serving alcoholic drinks and creating noise pollution.”
Azarnoush said the judiciary is “determined to confront social corruption and norm-breaking,” adding that “holding such ceremonies hurts the feelings of the general public and cannot be overlooked.”
He added that a case file has been opened against the defendants and that supplementary investigations are underway.
The arrests come amid renewed debate in Iran over privacy and double standards, following the recent release of a video from the wedding of Ali Shamkhani’s daughter.
Shamkhani, a prominent military and security figure in the Islamic Republic, is a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Video footage from his daughter’s wedding showed women dancing without headscarves and scenes of luxury that critics said contradicted the government’s calls for austerity.
