Sociologist and Civil Activist Released After Two Months in Detention

Ghorban Abbasi, a sociologist and civil activist from Naqadeh, was released from detention on bail on Monday, April 27. According to information obtained by IranWire, the activist was arrested on March 2, 2026, by Ministry of Intelligence forces in Naqadeh and subsequently transferred to the agency’s detention center in Urmia. Dr. Ghorban Abbasi was held in solitary confinement and subjected to interrogation throughout the duration of his detention.

A source close to the sociologist told IranWire that the charge leveled against him is “propaganda against the state.” According to the source, this charge stems from articles written and published by academics. Finally, Ghorban Abbasi was granted temporary release on bail set at 3 billion tomans. As of the time of this report, no further information regarding the ongoing judicial proceedings in his case has been released.
