Tehran’s prosecutor-general has said that 400 people have been handed prison sentences in the capital over their alleged involvement in the nationwide wave of demonstrations that erupted nearly three months ago.
Prosecutor-General Ali Al-Qasimehr said that 160 “rioters” received prison terms between five and 10 years, the semiofficial Mehr news agency reported on December 13.
Eighty others were sentenced to between two and five years, and 160 were sentenced to up to two years, Al-Qasimehr said, adding that 70 arrested prisoners have been released on bail.
He did not say how many people have been detained or charged over the past weeks.
More than 18,000 Iranians have reportedly been detained across the country in the state crackdown on the anti-government protests that erupted in the middle of September. More than 450 people, including dozens of children, have been killed by security forces, according to human rights activists.
