An Iranian activist was tortured in prison after defending fellow inmates protesting poor conditions, IranWire reports.

Rostam Bagheri was arrested on June 21 by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence agents in western Lorestan province and is being held at Khorramabad Prison on charges of “propaganda against the Islamic Republic.”

Prison warden Seyed Karim Hayat al-Gheib ordered Bagheri moved to solitary confinement after he defended an inmate who complained about conditions, according to IranWire sources.

Guards hung Bagheri from the ceiling with chains and beat him with plastic pipes until he lost consciousness, a source said. The beatings tore his eardrum, the source said.

Investigator Ehsan Veiskarami also beat Bagheri during the arrest.

Bagheri had previously suffered a torn eardrum from police beatings in Tehran in 2022 during protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in custody.

He was sentenced to three years for participating in the demonstrations but was later pardoned.

Authorities re-arrested him in 2023 on the anniversary of protester Nika Shakarami’s death.
