Iranian Kurdish City Under Siege and Family of the Dead Ordered to be Silent

After four days of protest across the country, elementary and secondary schools in Marivan in Iran’s Kurdistan region were closed on November 18 and 19, along with Payam-e Nur University and government offices. Shops and markets were also closed, and bazaar merchants staged a strike to voice their anger about the violence toward and killing of protesters. After authorities and closed the roads to the neighbouring towns of Hejrat (Jejsazi) and Kanindinar, on the evening of Monday, November 18, all roads to the the city were blocked, and a travel ban was put in place. 

At about 1am on Tuesday, November 19, the bodies of two protesters killed in the unrest were returned to their families. Authorities instructed the families to bury the bodies immediately and told them that no one outside the families should be informed of the burials or attend the funerals.

Three injured protesters from Marivan were also taken to hospitals in Sanandaj and Kermanshah on Tuesday and were reported to be in a critical condition.
