A group of women political prisoners incarcerated in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison have burned their headscarves on the one-year anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death in police custody.

“To voice our opposition to the unyielding cruelty of the religious authoritarian government, on September 16 - a day when using the pretext of compulsory hijab, our nation grieved the unjust loss of Mahsa and many other Iranian men and women - we burned our headscarves in Evin prison’s courtyard,” a statement posted on prisoner Narges Mohammadi’s Instagram account reads.

Golrokh Eraei, Shakila Monfared and Azadeh Abedini are the other signatories of the statement.

The burning of headscarves by protesters was one of the initial actions used during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, symbolising their resistance to societal restrictions.

This demonstration by female political prisoners coincided with male political prisoners’ declaration of a hunger strike in solidarity with the protesters on the anniversary of Amini’s death.

In a statement released on Friday on social media, student prisoners Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi said they were launching their hunger strike “in solidarity with the uprising of the people of Iran.”

“An uprising is under way, an uprising for freedom, an uprising to dismantle any form of dictatorship, whether it wears a crown or a turban,” they said.

Five other political and civil activists incarcerated in Evin prison - Mostafa Tajzadeh, Saeed Madani, Hossein Razzaq, Mehdi Mahmoudian and Mohammad Najafi - have announced their intention to join the hunger strike.
