Schools are closed for a second day in Tehran due to severe air pollution.

A thick smog often hangs over the capital, but news that air pollution was three times above levels considered to be safe prompted officials to close schools across the city. Officials advised residents not to exercise outdoors, and hundreds of people wore face masks to protect themselves from the poor air quality, which has not reached such dangerous levels since March.

Weather forecasters say the smog is expected to clear on November 16, when strong winds are due to hit the capital and clear some of the pollution.
