The Shia holy month of Muharram took place in Iran this year at the height of the fifth wave of coronavirus infections, but also at a time of widespread “lockdown fatigue”. A citizen journalist in Tehran’s Shohada Square sent IranWire these photos of religious mourners queueing up to buy offerings at votive food stands. “It was as if the pandemic was over,” they said. “People were distributing offerings, and these people were queuing for votive chicken kebab.”
