The Islamic Republic of Iran has revealed an underground air force large enough to store and operate fighter jets, bombers and drones, official media reported on February 7.

The Iranian air force has seen an increasing number of crashes and equipment failures in recent years as the Islamic Republic struggles to stay relevant with aging, outdated technology.

Despite having to deal with major sanctions to its military programs, the Islamic Republic has developed military drones used by Russia in its war in Ukraine.

The IRNA and Tasmin news agencies said that the “Oghab-44” base, or "Eagle-44" in English, is built deep underground and houses fighters equipped with long-range cruise missiles.

The reports did not say where the base is located. They claimed that “several tactical underground bases” of the Air Force have been constructed across Iran in recent years.

In May 2022, the Iranian military gave details about an underground base that houses drones, as the Islamic Republic seeks to protect military assets from potential air strikes by its foreign foes.

"Any attack on Iran from our enemies, including Israel, will see a response from our many air force bases including Eagle 44," the chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, Mohammad Bagheri, told state TV.
