The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared in an official statement on Thursday, June 4, that “no peace will be established in the region” until Israel withdraws from Lebanon. A ceasefire plan between Lebanon and Israel has been announced through US mediation. Nevertheless, Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon and Hezbollah drone strikes on northern Israel have continued over the past few days.
In its statement, the IRGC emphasized: “Our initial condition for accepting a ceasefire in the regional war has been a ceasefire across all fronts, including Lebanon.” This precondition, re-emphasized by the IRGC in its statement, is reportedly one of the reasons that has hindered a meaningful agreement between Iran and the United States and prolonged peace negotiations.
Following the release of the IRGC’s statement, the Secretary-General of Lebanese Hezbollah also rejected the ceasefire plan between Lebanon and Israel, threatening that if Israeli attacks on villages in southern Lebanon continue, the group will target northern Israel.
Nonetheless, the President of Lebanon has called the agreement the “last opportunity” and said a ceasefire could begin within the next 24 hours.
