The United States military has conducted airstrikes against two facilities in eastern Syria used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated groups.

The attacks were in response to a series of attacks on US forces in both Iraq and Syria over the past week, according to the Pentagon.

One of these attacks saw a US warship shoot down more than a dozen drones and four cruise missiles fired by Iranian-backed Houthis off the coast of Yemen last week.

The growing tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict have seen a surge in attacks against US and coalition troops, with at least 19 attacks reported in Iraq and Syria by Iran-backed forces during this period.

These attacks have left 21 U.S. personnel with minor injuries. News outlets also reported that one contractor had a heart attack during an attack and died.

"These precision self-defense strikes are a response to a series of ongoing and mostly unsuccessful attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups that began on October 17," US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.

The airstrikes occurred at approximately 430am local time in Syria, near Abu Kamal, a town on the Syrian-Iraqi border.

Two F-16 fighter jets conducted the operation, using precision munitions. The targets of the strikes were weapons and munitions storage facilities, Reuters reported.
