Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei urged the new parliament to prioritize national interests over unproductive media disputes.
Khamenei was speaking at the opening ceremony of the new parliament on Monday. The ceremony marked the official start of the new parliamentary session.
Khamenei emphasized the importance of “a relaxing and hopeful parliament that inspires efforts and invites empathy and brotherhood” within the country.
He highlighted the blend of experienced and new parliamentarians, stating that it signifies “the nation’s House utilizing its constitutional powers to achieve progress.”
However, he stressed the need for “maturity and seriousness” to ensure legislation and oversight functions avoid “turbulence and chaos” as well as stagnation.
Khamenei reminded representatives that they embody the Iranian nation as a whole.
“The oath of office the lawmakers take is not ceremonial and theatrical, but it is a real oath that creates responsibility for them,” he said.
