The murder case of acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Dariush Mehrjui and his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, remains enigmatic, according to Amir Mousakhani, the lawyer representing the main accused.
In an interview with Etemad newspaper, Mousakhani highlighted the case's complexity, suggesting some ambiguities may never be resolved.
He revealed that his client, known in Iranian media as Karim, now denies the murders, claiming his previous statements were coerced.
Karim faces potential execution for premeditated murder, along with additional penalties for theft and illegal entry.
Mousakhani highlighted several inconsistencies in the case, including language barriers during interrogations, as the defendants' native language differs significantly from Persian and the "lack of a strong motive" for Karim to commit the murders.
Mehrjui and Mohammadifar were found stabbed to death in their villa near Tehran province last October.
Their slayings caused shock and outrage among Iranians, with many drawing parallels with political assassinations that have rocked the country over the past decades.
The case's unresolved questions and the suspect's retraction of his confession have intensified public interest and speculation about the true circumstances of the murders.
