A former Iranian government official has attributed the inclusion of women in President Masoud Pezeshkian's cabinet to the 2022 nationwide uprising following Mahsa Amini's death.
Mohammed Sahafi, Deputy Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance under Mohammad Khatami, said that the appointments of four women to high-ranking positions in Pezeshkian's administration are a direct result of the 2022 protests.
His comment gains significance as the protests, known as the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, faced severe government crackdown.
In a post on X, Sahafi emphasized the impact of the protests, writing: "It is no exaggeration to say that the presence of women in the highest ranks of Pezeshkian's administration is primarily due to the Woman, Life, Freedom movement before anything else."
The women appointed to Pezeshkian's cabinet include Zahra Behrouz-Azar as Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, Farzaneh Sadegh as Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Shina Ansari as Head of Iran's Department of Environment, and Fatemeh Mohajerani as the government spokesperson.
The 2022 protests erupted across Iran in response to the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman, at the hands of Iran’s morality police or allegedly violating the country's strict dress code. Her death sparked widespread outrage that gained momentum, uniting diverse groups across more than 100 cities and universities demanding justice and greater freedoms. It ultimately became known as the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement.
