Two Iranian athletes and a coach participating in the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships have been arrested on sexual assault charges.
Iran’s national athletics team has been competing in the Asian Championships hosted by Gumi city in South Korea since May 27.
South Korean media reported that on May 31, authorities received a report that a woman, around 20 years old, was sexually assaulted around 7 AM that day by Iranian athletes and others at a hotel in Gumi.
According to the South Korean police report, two athletes, around 30 years old, and one team coach were arrested minutes later.
Reports say the Iranian athletes and coach met the young woman at a bar in Gumi, where the athletes’ village is located, then brought her to a hotel where the alleged assault occurred.
The Iranian team had been participating in various track and field events as part of the continental competition.
South Korean police have not released additional details about the investigation or the identities of those arrested.
