On Sunday, January 11, 2026, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said that Japan opposes the use of force against peaceful protests, pointing to reports of a high number of people killed and injured during Iran’s nationwide demonstrations.
In a statement posted on her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Takaichi wrote: “The Government of Japan is deeply concerned about the worsening situation in Iran and has received reports indicating that a large number of civilians have been killed or injured during the ongoing protests.”
She expressed hope that the situation in Iran would be resolved “as soon as possible through peaceful means.”
Takaichi also noted: “Japan will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and protection of Japanese citizens residing in Iran.”
The protests in Iran have now entered their 14th night. According to IranWire, Islamic Republic security forces have used live ammunition against protesters. Medical workers told IranWire that the number of people killed and injured is far higher than what has been reported by official media.
Despite the Islamic Republic cutting off internet access and isolating citizens from the outside world since the evening of Thursday, January 8, protesters have continued to return to the streets night after night. Reports and images show demonstrators out again on Saturday night, January 10, marking the 14th consecutive night of protests across Iran.
