Asim Munir arrives in Tehran to help bridge gaps as Iran-U.S. talks head toward a possible second round.

Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, reached Tehran on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, leading a high-level political and security delegation.

State media (IRIB) reported that the senior Pakistani military official’s visit is aimed at “delivering a message from the United States and planning for the second round of talks.”

At the same time, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit is intended at “reducing the rifts between Iran and the United States.”

IRIB also quoted “informed sources” in Pakistan as saying that the second round of Iran-U.S. negotiations is expected to be held in Islamabad in the coming days. Earlier reports had already suggested that Pakistan is working to host another round of discussions later this week.

The first round of talks took place this past Saturday in Islamabad, but after nearly 21 hours of discussions, both sides failed to reach an agreement. Despite this, JD Vance, the U.S. Vice President and head of the American delegation, said in an interview that there had been “significant progress” during the initial round and hinted at the possibility of further meetings.

Earlier today, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei had also indicated that a Pakistani delegation was likely to arrive in Iran.

The visit by Pakistan’s Army Chief comes at a time when the United States, under orders from Donald Trump, continues its naval blockade of Iran, which began on Monday.
