U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that the next session of talks with Islamic Republic officials to end the war might take place “perhaps as early as this weekend,” adding that he might even attend the meeting himself.
Speaking at the White House on Thursday evening, April 16, the President stated that Iran has “agreed” to hand over its stockpiles of enriched uranium and that both sides are “close” to a peace deal to end six weeks of war.
He emphasized, however, that if an agreement is not reached, the war will resume.
“They have agreed to give us what I call the nuclear dust,” Trump remarked, referring to the enriched materials. He added, “There is a high probability we will reach a deal,” noting that Iran has agreed to “almost everything.”
Trump once again spoke about Iran’s new leaders, stating that he has found them to be “reasonable.”
Furthermore, Mr. Trump rejected the 20-year enrichment restriction that was reportedly requested by Islamic Republic officials, asserting: “They must never have nuclear weapons.”
Iran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons. Previously, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations told the General Assembly that Tehran is “cautiously optimistic” regarding the negotiations with the United States.
