Morality Police to Educate Women with Bad Hejab

Hats, short coats and shapely stockings are not regarded as proper hejab for women, according to the head of the morality unit of Iran’s police force (NAJA).

“Hats do not properly cover women’s heads,” said Colonel Massoud Zahedian on December 6. “Wearing short and tight coats, displaying foreign, unfamiliar patterns and stockings that emphasize body shape are not regarded as a proper Islamic dress. Women wearing them will be detained and taken to designated centers to correct their appearance.”

He added: “Women with bad veils who do not observe the general rules of hejab and chastity will be identified and educated.”

Speaking about the moral unit of the security police, Zahedian said the measures were necessary in order to “safeguard cultural and social integrity and tradition, as requested by the majority of Iranian society.” He was, he said, responding to citizens’ demands to uphold morality.

Asked if the morality police would continue to monitor Islamic dress over the winter months to the same levels it did in summer, Zahedian said it was NAJA’s job to “fight any abnormalities in appearance. Women should not offend public chastity or they will be prosecuted.”
