Hunters Asked to Control Stray Dog Population

The municipal government in Kelardsaht, northern Iran, has called on hunters to help “control the population of stray dogs” in the city.

In a public announcement, municipal authorities appealed to hunters in the region, asking them to team up with the government between January 10 and February 10, 2015, killing as many stray dogs as possible in the specified time period.

According to the Azad News Agency (ANA) website, the number of stray animals and vermin in Iran has grown considerably due to a lack of a suitable garbage collection system, and that the problem is particularly concerning in northern cities. According to ANA, the municipality, which is responsible for garbage collection, mercilessly kills the animals in an effort to maintain public health.

The Kelardasht region, which was once an affluent tourist spot, is today facing a number of environmental challenges, including deforestation, flooding and faulty waste management.
