“Western Haircuts and Tattoos are Un-Islamic”

The leader of the Hairdressers’ Trade Union, Mostafa Govahi, banned hair salons from offering customers “Western hairstyles” on May 4.

“The permits of salons that promote haircuts in a ’devil-worship’ style, will be taken away. They will then go to trial,” said Govahi. “Equally, tattoos, sun beds and plucked eyebrows are also punishable offences.”

Recently, a member of parliament from Qazvin, northwest of Tehran, tabled a bill that would ban women from getting tattoos and imposing restrictions on hair removal services.

“If a salon ignores Islamic law by cutting hair in a ‘devil-worship’ style or by offering similar services, that salon will receive a written notice that will order it to stop,” Govahi told Iran Students’ News Agency. “But then if the salon continues to do this, it will permanently lose its work permit.”

He added, “These hairdressers undermine the work of other hairdressers and thus need to be punished. What’s more, we’ve found out that most of them don’t even have the necessary work permit, and therefore will have to face corresponding legal charges anyway.”
