A police officer shot and killed a dog in front of its owners in Koohsar, northwest of Tehran, on May 7.
The owner of the dog gave an account of what happened to Iran’s Society for the Protection of Animals (SPCA): “Bobby was diagnosed with fatty liver disease, and, as recommended by his vet, on Thursday afternoon, we took him for a walk in Koohsar. As we were walking back at around 8pm, a police officer got out of his police car, drew his gun and shot Bobby in the head at point-blank range. Bobby fell to the ground and died.”
In November 2014, a group of MPs proposed a bill that would make it a crime to take a pet dog into a public space. The bill has not passed into law, but the Kooshar police officer said he shot the dog because it had behaved aggressively toward him.
Speaking to the SPCA, Bobby’s owner said the police officer showed no remorse. “At the police station, I was in tears and asked the constable why he had killed an animal. He laughed and ridiculed me: ‘So what? I’d kill 10 more; I’d even kill people!’ But in the presence of police investigators, he falsely claimed that Bobby had attacked him and that he fired his gun out of fear”.
Bobby, who was seven, was taken to Payetakht Veterinary Clinic where Dr Al-e Davood reported the cause of death as “a single gunshot wound to the head.”
