Iranian political prisoner Atefeh Rangriz launched a hunger strike on October 18 to protest her prolonged detention, abuse in prison and harassment of her family, an independent women's rights group reported.

The Bidarzani group said that Rangriz, a researcher, writer and women's rights activist, has been in custody for over a month and is currently being held in Shahrood prison in the northern city of Semnan.

The reasons for Rangriz’s arrest and the charges she faces are unknown.

The activist was apprehended by security forces on September 10 and subsequently transferred to the Semnan Intelligence Department, where she was subjected to multiple interrogation sessions.

Human rights sources have said that the judiciary of the Islamic Republic has prevented Rangriz's temporary release from custody after her family posted a bail of 1 billion tomans ($20,000).

On October 13, the Free Workers' Union reported that Rangriz is suffering heart issues caused by the repeated interrogations she endured at the Semnan Intelligence Department.

It also said that prison authorities did not allow her to receive medical attention at a hospital.
