Iranian authorities have arrested two women for dancing in public while dressed as "Haji Firooz," a traditional character associated with the upcoming Persian New Year.
A video of the women's performance, which circulated on social media, went viral before their arrest last week.
Dressed in the red garb of Haji Firooz, a character symbolizing renewal and marking the arrival of spring, the women were seen dancing in Tehran's Tajrish Square.

However, authorities deemed their act "social defiance" and "norm-breaking," leading to their arrest by order of the Tehran prosecutor, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
The news agency reported that a court case has been opened for the arrested women.
Iranian law prohibits women from dancing in public. In early 2023, a young couple in their early twenties was sentenced to over ten years in prison for sharing a dance video.
